The best-preserved Roman theater in the world. Its back wall, nearly 350 feet long and 118 feet high, supports a magnificent and nearly complete scena – the backdrop of a classic theater. Abandoned when Christian kings prohibited pagan entertainments in about 300 AD, it had filled up with houses – only the back wall suggesting what lay beneath. Restoration in the 19th century took nearly 40 years. Today, it seats 7,000 in a semi-circle of tiers built against a hill. The acoustics are superb and, if you have even a slight interest in theater, walking the stage area is magic. There is access to the ruins of a Roman Gymnasium and Capitol, next to the theater. Amuseum across the street details the town’s colorful history and the restoration of the theater.
